Voters in Taiwan chose the current vice president, Lai Ching-te, center, as president-elect. Photo: Annabelle Chih/Getty ImagesTaiwan will end formal relations with the Pacific island nation of Nauru as a result of Chinese efforts to poach Taipei’s diplomatic partners, a senior Taiwanese government official said Monday. The move comes days after Taiwan’s ruling party won a closely fought presidential election, putting current Vice President Lai Ching-te—whom Beijing condemns as a separatist—in position to become the leader of the democratically self-ruled island in May.

Photo: Annabelle Chih/Getty ImagesTAIPEI—A last-minute effort by Taiwan’s opposition parties to combine forces in a coming presidential election has crumbled in spectacular fashion, increasing the likelihood that the island democracy will continue as a central flashpoint in ties between the U.S. and China. Taiwan’s main opposition Nationalist Party, also known as the Kuomintang, struck a surprise deal last week with the Taiwan People’s Party to unite in a coalition ticket favoring friendlier ties with China that political analysts said had a real shot of coming out on top in the island’s presidential contest in January.

TAIPEI—For years, Beijing hoped to win control of Taiwan by convincing its people their economic futures were inextricably tied to China. Instead, more Taiwanese businesses are pivoting to the U.S. and other markets, reducing the island democracy’s dependence on China and angering Beijing as it sees its economic leverage over Taiwan ebb.

A deal between two Taiwan opposition parties is expected to bolster their chances against Vice President Lai Ching-te, a leading candidate of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. Photo: sam yeh/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesTAIPEI—Taiwan’s two largest opposition parties reached a deal to collaborate in a pivotal election scheduled for early January that has major ramifications for Taiwan’s future and U.S.-China relations. Taiwan’s main opposition Nationalist Party, which favors closer relations with Beijing, said it would work with a third party founded by a former Taipei mayor to run jointly for the 2024 elections. The long-anticipated deal is expected to bolster the opposition’s chances against Vice President Lai Ching-te, a leading candidate of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, which has forged tighter ties with the U.S., and is currently leading in the polls.

Photo: sam yeh/AFP/Getty ImagesFor decades, Apple has navigated an escalating series of challenges in China, from fake stores and factory protests to tightening censorship and app rules. Now, the iPhone maker risks getting dragged into the most volatile issue in U.S.-China relations: the future of Taiwan. On Sunday, Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn Technology—one of Apple’s largest suppliers—said it is cooperating with Chinese authorities after state media reported China had opened tax and land-use probes into the company. The investigations come as Foxconn’s billionaire founder Terry Gou pursues a bid for the Taiwan presidency.

Chinese dissident Wang Dan said Friday that an allegation against him of attempted rape was unfounded. Photo: nicholas kamm/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesIn late April, a fictional Netflix drama about Taiwanese politics went viral on the island with a story line about sexual-assault allegations that convulse the ruling party. A little more than a month later, the plot has crossed over into the real world, with potential ramifications for political forces that the U.S. relies on to keep pressure on China.

The U.S. and the Philippines have carried out the largest-ever annual military exercises amid an escalation of Chinese military activity around Taiwan. WSJ’s Shelby Holliday explains what makes this year’s drills different. Photo: Jes Aznar/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—Taiwan has begun preparing for a sharp rise in economic tension with China, stepping up efforts to encourage businesses to look for investments in the U.S. and other countries. Businesses from the island are facing a sprawling Chinese trade investigation involving nearly 2,500 goods, including agricultural products, metals, plastics, chemicals and minerals. The probe, which Beijing has said is in response to “trade barriers,” threatens to disrupt commerce to Taiwan’s top export destination.
China Concludes Military Exercises Encircling Taiwan

TAIPEI—China’s military wrapped up three days of exercises around Taiwan, including a swarm of jet fighters launched from one of its aircraft carriers, saying it gained experience coordinating its different forces as it encircled the self-ruled island. The Eastern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army, which oversees forces positioned closest to Taiwan, issued a statement on Monday announcing the end of the exercises, which were launched after Taiwan’s president returned from a visit to the U.S. that Beijing had loudly opposed.
TAIPEI—China’s military launched exercises around Taiwan in an apparent escalation of its response to an international tour by the self-governing island’s president that included highly scrutinized stops in the U.S. Hours after President Tsai Ing-wen returned to Taiwan on Friday night, Chinese maritime safety authorities said the country’s navy planned to conduct seven live-fire exercises over the course of 12 days off the coast of Fujian province, which faces Taiwan, starting Saturday morning.
Following an international tour by Taiwanese President Tsai Ing -wen that highlighted warming U.S. ties, her government cautioned that China’s response could be calibrated to appear low-key but still undercut the island’s security. Before, during and after a two-leg visit to the U.S. that began last week and ended Thursday, Beijing threatened Ms. Tsai’s travel would have consequences.
TAIPEI—Taiwan warned its allies not to be fooled by China’s relatively low-key response to warming U.S.-Taiwan ties, saying that Beijing is working to subtly undermine Taipei without sparking a broader conflict. In the most pivotal event of a groundbreaking visit to the U.S., Taiwan’s Tsai Ing -wen met with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California on Wednesday, marking the highest-level political meeting that a Taiwanese president has held while on U.S. soil. Beijing repeatedly lashed out at the encounter and threatened unspecified retaliation, leading to speculation that it might reprise wargames that it launched when Mr. McCarthy’s predecessor Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last year.
